Bio简介

Martin Schoeller is a portrait photographer renowned for his “Close Up” series and environmental character studies. His body of work spans more than two decades over which he has documented world leaders, entertainers, athletes, artists, business figures, indigenous groups and the homeless.

Schoeller grew up in Germany and studied at the Lette Verein in Berlin. He was deeply influenced by August Sander’s portraits of the poor, the working class and the bourgeoise, as well as a school of photographic typology known as the Becher-Schüler. Schoeller’s close ups emphasize facial features inconsistent and equal measure, creating a level platform for his diverse subjects.

In 1999 Schoeller joined as a contributing photographer for The New Yorker, where he continues to produce award-winning imagery. His work likewise appears in publications such as National GeographicVanity FairThe New York Times MagazineTIMERolling StoneGQand Esquire. His commercial clientele includes HBO, Netflix, Dreamworks, Warner Brothers, Amazon, Samsung, American Express, Nike, Mercedes Benz and Lavazza.

Schoeller’s portraits are exhibited and collected internationally and are included in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC. He lives and works in New York City.
